Welcome to the Owl's Nest Woodcarving Club.
As the name suggests, we are a group of people brought together by our love of wood and all it has to offer. Not only do we practice traditional carving techniques, such as ‘in-the-round’, ‘chip carving’, ‘relief carving’, canes, caricature, bark carving, and whatever other carving that can be explored... we are also known to try our hands at many other decorative applications, such as wood burning, wood colouring, sculpture, golf ball carving and even, on occasion….pumpkin carving. Whatever inspires!
The creative focus of the club is broad, but our direction is narrow; for all of our members to have fun, to be inspired, and to enjoy the company of like-minded people.
In our continued efforts to support and promote the art and skill of wood carving and burning (pyrography), we also cohost an annual wood carving competition in collaboration with the Grand Valley Woodcarvers Club, a club dedicated strictly to bird carving. We have been a part of this carving competition for over 30 years now. The show was originally sponsored by the KW Wood Show as part of their annual wood show at Bingemans in Kitchener and we had the pleasure of being part of that show for many years. However, the larger wood show came to an end in 2012. Since then, the two carving clubs have joined forces to continue to offer a carving competition that we are both proud of and honoured to be able to offer fellow carvers as well as the general public.
Pictures and winners of our portion of the 2017 Wood Art in the Cities show can be viewed in the show’s gallery tab as well as a winner’s list on the show winners tab. (For the Grand Valley bird carvers portion of the show please go to www.canadiannationals.net.)
So whether you are a current carver or a person who has always wanted to try your hand at carving, we would love to have you join our club. We are a small group of friends that meet every Thursday morning and Tuesday evening at The Waterloo Adult Recreation Centre.
The current club meeting times are:
Every Thurs morning: 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
Every Tues evening: 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
Feel free to drop in and check us out anytime during club hours at:
